criterioncast.com Gives Rob a Chance to Shine in “Cosmopolis”
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

Personally, I do think that Pattinson may have a bit more talent than a role like Edward in the Twilight series may suggest, and there is no other filmmaker more suited to getting that type of performance out of a young actor than Cronenberg. Toss in a “slightly futuristic metropolis” setting, and you could have quite an intriguing film.

SpinOff Online Calls Rob’s Choice to Be Apart of “Cosmopolis” Smart!
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

Robert Pattinson, the dreamy-eyed, debatably talented star of the ‘tween sensation Twilight series has nailed down his first post-vampire role, and it’s a bit of a coup. The actor will star in acclaimed director David Cronenberg’s adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel Cosmopolis, Deadline reports. The work of near-future fiction follows a young moneymaker (Pattinson) as he ends up being the target of an assassination after making a risky business decision.

I say “debatably talented” because, frankly, the jury’s still out on Pattinson from where I’m sitting. While I respect what the Twilight movies represent in terms of widening the reach and appeal of geek culture… they’re really not very good. I’m not familiar enough with Stephenie Meyer’s books to place the blame squarely in that direction, but it certainly feels like a failure on the ensemble level. The scripts, performances, cinematography, visual effects… it all feels like pop filmmaking in its lowest form, a series of low-budget spectacle-driven blockbusters. I understand the appeal, but I’m not willing to pass judgment on any of the cast based on their involvement in the series.

Pattinson has already stepped outside the Twilight fold a couple of times, notably playing artist Salvador Dali in Little Ashes and the lead role of Jacob Jankowski in director Francis Lawrence’s upcoming adaptation of the Sara Gruen novel, Water For Elephants. Cosmopolis will be his first role after the two-part telling of Breaking Dawn, Twilight‘s final chapter, wraps.

All negativity aside, this is a cool bit of casting and a smart move for the actor. Whether or not he can bring what is needed to the role remains to be seen, but working with a filmmaker as talented as Cronenberg on a high-profile adaptation will certainly put Pattinson’s skills to the test. And honestly, no matter how the movie turns out, there’s something to be said for the fact that this casting news will certainly inspire Pattinson’s more ardent supporters to go out and buy a Don DeLillo book. Anything that gets the kids of the world reading quality fiction is okay by me.

celebritynewsandstyle.com – Robert Pattinson Sheds His Good Guy Image in Cosmopolis
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

In this new movie, ‘Cosmopolis’, the gorgeous ‘Twilight’ star Robert Pattinson is an adulterer obsessed with his hair. Nice hair, though! So the odds are that we’re going to love this new movie, for which the first script leaks came today.Robert Pattinson is now confirmed in a starring role, replacing Colin Farrell who is needed for filming on ‘Total Recall’. The movie is thus set to attract a whole lot more attention. It’s very juicy, full of suspense, sex and money trouble, and Pattinson’s hair features heavily.

Robert plays a multi-billionaire financial guru with the obligatory pimped up limo, in search of a haircut. Be honest now, it’s just the fact that this is Robert Pattinson we’re talking about that has you interested at this stage, isn’t it? But an awful lot happens in that movie before he can get his glorious locks shorn. Within 24 hours, his character, Eric, bankrupt his clients with dodgy financial advice, is stalked by two would-be assassins, cheats on his wife and becomes obsessed with sex, often asking his wife, played by Marion Cotillard, “When are we going to have sex again?”

If only he’s asked around, there would have been so many volunteer hair stylists! It could have saved him a lot of trouble. But we do get to see a lot of the gorgeous Robert, which is a good thing. He gets his shirt off and even drops his pants for a doctor’s exam. He gets into lots of fights too.

SlashFilm: Robert Pattinson Replaces Colin Farrell in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

Let’s look at the different career paths of the two major male stars from Twilight. Taylor Lautner is doing what seems to be boilerplate action/tentpole stuff: Abduction and possibly Stretch bloody Armstrong. Robert Pattinson, meanwhile, is going a little more high-minded, co-starring with Cristoph Waltz in Water For Elephants and now taking over for Colin Farrell in David Cronenberg‘s adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel Cosmopolis. I know which actor I can respect more, without question. But what does this mean for the dedicated David Cronenberg fan?

I expect a lot of Cronenberg fans just exhaled a sad or exasperated sigh, for starters. I’ll admit that my own interest in Cosmopolis just took a dive. It’s a weird situation, where I can really respect Robert Pattinson for taking the gig, but him doing so really seems to ding the movie’s potential.

But what the hell; I’ve trusted Cronenberg for years and I’ll trust him again now. In the same way that I hope John Hillcoat can do a little technical rehab on Shia LeBeouf in The Wettest County in the World, I’m hoping that Cosmopolis will be a vessel to break Mr. Pattinson out of his Twilight mode. (And, to be fair, the Twilight films are hardly a venue in which to judge an actor — they’re so specific, and so dumb, that I think they could make even Daniel Day-Lewis look terrible.)

Pattinson will be onscreen a great deal in this film. Cosmopolis is about a whizkid financial guy — presumably a much more dynamic role than Twilight offers — and takes place almost entirely in a limo that is transporting him across the city during the course of a day. Other cast is attached (Marion Cotillard) or in talks (Paul Giamatti). No confirmation on those names yet, or on additional cast members.

Meanwhile, how big of a Total Recall fan — or a paycheck fan — is Colin Farrell to choose Len Wiseman’s new Total Recall over working with David Cronenberg? I like Farrell a lot, and think he’s made some interesting and generally good choices in his career. But this one is a serious WTF situation.

Paris Match talks about Robert being in Cosmopolis
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

This will be one of the big movies of 2012 …. The actor from the “Twilight” saga has replaced Colin Farrell in the distribution of “Cosmopolis,” the film adaptation of the novel from Don De Lillo visionary.

It had to be a filmmaker of the caliber of David Cronenberg to tackle such a project. Roman cult of the great American author Don De Lillo, “Cosmopolis” told with a force unheard of visionary New York before the attacks on the World Trade Center and the global crisis, as already at the brink. To embrace the announced end of an empire and the incredible folly of the modern world, the author of “Libra” followed the footsteps, or rather treading water in a limousine Golden Boy of 28 years, Eric Packer, who must cross the Big Apple for an important appointment at the hairdresser ….

As fascinating as it is, adapt “Cosmopolis” in the image is real gamble, both metaphorical writing Don De Lillo and construction of the labyrinthine narrative tribute to the “Ulysses” by Joyce, ahead impossible to transcribe. But David Cronenberg has been brilliantly adapted for the cinema of the novels that were considered impossible to film “Naked Lunch” by William S. Burroughs, “Dead Ringers” by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland (the original novel titled “Twins”), “Crash” by JG Ballard, or more recently the fantastic graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, A History of Violence.

A bold choice

To embody the face of evil capitalist David Cronenberg had initially thought of Colin Farrell, the great actor of the “New World” and “Miami Vice.” In May 2010, an announcement was even made in this direction, in the very official newspaper “Variety” on the sidelines of the Cannes Festival. But the project has fallen behind in terms of production, the Irish actor has finally given up the role, preferring the remake of “Total Recall”. Never mind. Thursday, Paulo Branco and the production company Alfama Films, which co-produced the feature film, formally announced the selection of Robert Pattinson to embody Eric Packer, confirming the rumors.

For the young actor, he is a new impetuous to his career, which embraces the eyes of teenagers around the world, the vampire Edward Cullen in “Twilight.” The one who played Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, has always wanted to break his pretty boy image, even if he has not played roles in commercial films yet. In “Cosmopolis,” it will give the reply to Marion Cotillard, who plays his wife on screen, although she is older than her partner (35 years against 24). The filming will start in Toronto May 23, 2011.

Cosmopolis is Robert Pattinson’s Chance for Mega Stardom
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

From Metrowny

Robert Pattinson has been given his chance to expand his fan base and vault himself into the realm of such great actors as Johnny Depp and Tom Cruise. By replacing Colin Farrell in the movie Cosmopolis Rob Pattinson now has a film that can help him make the transition from a heartthrob in fantasy films to a serious actor in a blockbuster film.

Cosmopolis is a film based on the book written by Don DeLillo. The movie is about the story of Eric Packer, a 28 year old multi-billionaire asset manager who makes an odyssey across midtown Manhattan in order to get a haircut. During the course of the day Parker ends up betting his entire fortune in the market against the Yen and ends up in trouble with people gunning for him. The plot takes place during one days time.
Pattinson will star in the movie with Marion Cotttilard and Paul Giamati.

This is a great opportunity for Robert Pattinson to show that he is more than just a pretty face that can act in a fantasy film. I understand that Pattinson is also set to star in Water for Elephants, and that film, with a good performance, could advance his career as well, but to be the star of an action/thriller film could do more for his career. He has already shown that he can play a sensitive character with a love interest in the Twilight films so Water for Elephants won’t give us too much more of an insight into his acting ability, but if he can pull off being the star of an action/thriller then the sky is the limit for Pattinson because it means he could act in any movie regardless of character or plot.

Variety Talks Robert Pattinson’s New Project, “Cosmopolis”
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

Robert Pattinson has signed on to “Cosmopolis,” which David Cronenberg penned and will direct.

Based on the Don DeLillo tome of the same name, story follows a multimillionaire played by Pattinson who risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a cataclysmic day.

Cronenberg will also produce along with Paulo Branco. Renee Tab will exec produce.

Pattinson is slowly trying to break away from his “Twilight” fan base and aiming for more adult-driven projects like this and the Francis Lawrence-directed “Water for Elephants,” which also stars Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz.

Cronenberg just finished filming “A Dangerous Method” with Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender and had a slew of projects on his plate to pursue next, including an “Eastern Promises” sequel he has been trying to get off the ground for some time now.

With Pattinson attached, “Cosmopolis” will more than likely be the next film Cronenberg shoots even though a start date has not been set yet

businessinsider.com Looks at Rob’s New Role in “Cosmopolis”
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

After years of playing a vampire, it’s fitting that Robert Pattinson’s next role should be a trader. (It was either that or a squid.)

According to the Wrap, Robert Pattinson just stole the lead role in the movie, an adaptation of 74-year old postmodern author Don Delillo’s book, Cosmopolis, from Colin Farrell.

The details:

Described as a study of capitalism in a slightly futuristic metropolis, the drama will find Pattinson playing Eric Packer, a financial wunderkind who risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a tumultuous trading day. The young man’s decision backfires and he becomes a possible assassination target during a 24-hour odyssey across Manhattan.

If the movie is anything like the book the movie’s based on, it should be awesome. First of all, the lead is a 28-year old billionaire who entertains “highly sexed women” while his wife is merely an extra he sees outside the limo he’s riding around in all day (one thing we hope they change — please don’t let this be another Phonebooth).

His bet against the rise in the yen apparently “parallels his own fall,” as he loses his clients millions of dollars, and interestingly, he enjoys it; “relishing being unburdened by the loss of so much money.”

This brings us to another reason why we like the idea of this movie. The book is written as a modern re-interpretation of Ulysses, so it could be smart. Also, John Updike wrote a scathing review of the book in the New Yorker, and Walter Kirn (who wrotethe book, Up in the Air) had an equally critical take in his New York Times review.

Their criticism is primarily that:

* “barely corporeal cerebral entities occupy the pages” (Kirn)
* “the sounds they produce are so monotonous… that it’s a mystery why they’re even bothering” (Kim)
* “DeLillo’s sympathies are so much with the poor that his rich man seems a madman” (Updike)

Good books almost never turn into good movies, so this bodes well. They better change that last bit though. Otherwise, this’ll just be another Wall Street 2.

Inside the sounds of Britney’s new album

From Alphabeat to Duffy, Amy Winehouse to Keane, we love us some foreign-born music makers here at PopWrap … but there is also something to be said for embracing the Made in America sounds of Nicki Minaj, Kelly Clarkson and Britney Spears. Today one of those U.S. loves is breaking down the walls between both worlds.

Britney Spears is slowly leaking news on her upcoming album (rumored to be dropping in March), and it’s stuffed with some of the best European music makers on the planet. Here is a run-down of the production geniuses whispered to be teaming up with Brit Brit.
The most recent name reportedly working on new Brit beats is the production team Xenomania — they’ve baked up hits for Pet Shop Boys, Cher and Kylie Minogue as well as more than 20 major British bands who, if we named, you’d be all, “huh?”

Then we have William Orbit, who worked with the UK girl group All Saints on tracks like “Pure Shores” (the only US hit) as well as “Black Coffee” and “Dreams.” He also primed tracks like “Spiral” for another gal gang, the uber-famous Sugababes. But look for his hand to deliver Britney a single that will pull from the up-tempo hit “Feel Good Time” that he and P!nk supplied for the “Charlie’s Angels 2” soundtrack.
Next up is English producer Fraser T. Smith, who’s had major success in the U.S., working on Taio Cruz’s No.1 single “Break Your Heart.” Other recent successes — Ke$ha’s “Dirty Picture”, Pixie Lott’s “Boys and Girls” and four-tracks off Cee-Lo’s newest CD “Lady Killer” — promise that Fraser and Britney have all the ingredients to deliver more than brilliant beats.

MTV – Our Top 5 Films For 2011: ‘Water for Elephants’ Takes Center Ring At No. 3
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

When the name Robert Pattinson comes up for discussion, a lot of people don’t remember him for his small part as Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” Only the die-hard fans have watched the tear-jerking “Remember Me” over and over, and did anyone ever see “Little Ashes“? The 24-year-old British heartthrob is best known for playing Edward Cullen in “The Twilight Saga,” dating costar Kristen Stewart, and to haters and skeptics alike, is seen as just another hot guy that likes to suck blood.

Movie buffs willing to give Rob the benefit of the doubt have been holding their breath to see him prove himself as a serious actor. We’re pretty sure 2011 is the year he’ll do just that. Yes, he’ll be reprising his vampire persona in “Breaking Dawn” and showing a more serious side in the period piece “Bel Ami,” but his role in our No. 3 film for 2011, “Water for Elephants,” is what will solidify his place in Hollywood’s shining spotlight.

It’s hard not to be excited for the April 22 release. The film adaptation of Sara Gruen’s No. 1 New York Times best selling novel follows Jacob Jankowski, a white collar veterinarian student who drops out of Cornell during his senior finals following a family tragedy. He finds himself accidentally joining the rag-tag Benzini Brothers Circus after jumping a midnight train and zig-zags across the country, making unlikely friends, finding forbidden love and seeing the dark side of the greatest show on earth. It’s the stuff every good movie is made of. Oh, did we forget to mention that Rob looks smokin’ hot, too?

The movie has already garnered a little bit of Oscar buzz for Rob’s performance, and the trailer alone is enough to give you goose-bumps. Academy Award winners Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz helm the film with Rob, which promises to give you the same thrill of finding a prize in a box of Cracker Jacks.
