Earlier this month, Britney Spears debuted the video for her latest single, Criminal. She’s come a long way since that now-infamous schoolgirl skirt, pink pigtails, and brow-raising tummy exposé. Her tumultuous history and painfully public fall from grace are only chapters gone-by in what now seems like the comeback of a century. Brit’s rollercoaster life finally seems to be coasting comfortably. Love her, hate her, say what you want about her, but Britney Spears isn’t done changing the world.
The Criminal video features the mother of two looking fit as hell in a steamy shower scene with costar and beaux of nearly three years, Jason Trawick. Directed by Chris Marrs Piliero, Criminal is arguably Spears’ best since 2004’s Toxic: although her hand-dancing is limited and a far fall from the girl once known for her dizzying choreography, the narrative-heavy and nearly five-minute video is the sexiest, most exciting product of the Blackout, Circus, and Femme Fatale eras. Criminal embodies new Britney, as she’s slowed down a bit, matured, and rocks a more curvaceous figure. But at the end of the day, she can still draw out a vowel like nobody’s business and exude unmatched sex appeal. She’s different from other pop stars: she’s grown, but never changed. She has, however, changed music and pop culture forever, and doesn’t show signs of letting up just yet.
