‘Twilight’ screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to write, produce ‘Earthseed’ for Paramount
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

From EW:

From undead vampires to engineered teenagers: Twilight Saga screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg has been tapped by Paramount Pictures to adapt and produce a feature film version of the 1983 sci-fi young adult novel Earthseed by Pamela Sargent. The story follows a group of teenagers created from genetic material and raised by a spacecraft seeking a new planet to repopulate humanity. As it happens, two sequels to the book were recently published: Farseed, in 2007, and Seed Seeker, in 2010. “Earthseed is an incredibly compelling world, and I’m excited to dive into it,” Rosenberg said in a statement. “The film’s premise easily lends itself to an exciting franchise with plenty of room for invention and humor.”

‘Twilight’ Writer Melissa Rosenberg Takes Over Summit’s ‘Highlander’ Script
Posted by Maria • 1 Comment »

After taking on vampires in Summit’s Twilight Saga, writer Melissa Rosenberg is tackling a different kind of immortal being: Scottish highlanders.

The scribe is in negotiations to come on board to work on the studio’s remake of Highlander. Neal Moritz is producing the project, which offers an update on the 1986 movie starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown. Justin Lin (Fast Five) is attached to direct. Peter Davis is also producing.

The original story centered on a Scottish swordsman, who discovers he is part of a secret race of near-immortal beings and faces off against an unstoppable barbarian who covets the power gained from there being only one of their kind left.

Summit acquired remake rights to Highlander from Panzer/Davis Productions, producer of the original film, in 2008. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway wrote the initial draft while Cormac Wibberley and Marianne Sellek Wibberley also worked on the script.

Melissa Rosenburg at 2010 New Yorker Festival

Melissa Rosenberg, who’s adapted Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” books for the screen, added “Fantasia,” and Matt Reeves, the director of “Let Me In” and “Cloverfield,” admitted that he always had to close his eyes during the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride. But the subject at hand wasn’t forest creatures or animatronic drunks. Noël Carroll, a CUNY professor and author of “The Philosophy of Horror,” and moderator and staff writer Joan Acocella joined this group to discuss sex, gore, and the characters on which they usually intersect these days: vampires.

These vampires are lost souls, Carroll said, the type that women long to make their “projects.” The sex, King pointed out, is invariably adolescent—“they just want to bite the girl’s neck”—and Rosenberg elaborated: the self-loathing Edward from “Twilight” is “actually very safe, because of his own morality.” King asked if there was a parallel between maintaining abstinence and not wanting to suck her blood? Rosenberg didn’t miss a beat: “Absolutely.”
