#76 Stephenie Meyer Author of the ‘Twilight’ books Not since Judy Blume has an author so adeptly captured — and profited from — teen angst as Meyer. Her four-book Twilight series has sold more than 100 million copies and has been printed in 37 languages. In 2008, her net worth was $125 million, and Forbes estimates her annual income at $40 million. It’s hard to believe the Cave Creek, Ariz., housewife never had written so much as a short story before publishing her first book. According to Amazon, she ranks as the second-best-selling author of the decade, beaten only by Harry Potter’s J.K. Rowling. “Twihards” can enjoy Bella and Edward’s tormented love affair in a movie franchise that has grossed more than $1.7 billion worldwide, with two films yet to come. Meyer surely won’t suffer much financially going forward; her post-Twilight trilogy, starting with No. 1 New York Times best-seller The Host, is in preproduction at Nick Wechsler Prods. and is rumored to begin shooting early next year. Anna Rice (Interview With A Vampire) gives her opinions on the Twilight Saga and Stephenie Meyer as a writer. I think she’s trying to be genuine in her critiquing. At first, I thought she dealt a few backhanded compliments (with the ‘easy to read’ comment, etc) but after watching more, I believe she’s just trying to say that she likes Stephenie’s writing and angle, she just doesn’t personally agree with certain themes. Which, doesn’t matter because it’s a very subjective topic… since immortals don’t actually exist. Great video! |

The Host was a #1 New York Times Best Seller, and remained on the list for 26 weeks, and also spent over 36 weeks on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list. This film is expected to be the first of three in a trilogy. The sequels will be titled “The Soul” and “The Seeker”. Stephenie Meyer has said that she casts actors for the roles in her head when she writes. She stated that with “Twilight”, she felt the actors needed to be up-and-coming artists that haven’t been recognized yet. With “The Host” she thinks the lead actors could be A-List talent. She names Robert Redford, Ben and Casey Affleck, and Matt Damon as actors that she would like to see star in the film. Read Full Story Here | Via/Twilightish |

The site reports: “At least one or more of the four books had been on the list since July 12, 2007 (170 consecutive weeks). Breaking Dawn fell from the top 50 to number 54, Twilight is at 172, New Moon is number 238, and Eclipse is 198. Meyer’s publicist tells USA Today that they expect to see a spike in book sales when the Eclipse DVD is released in December. Plus, Meyer is releasing The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide in April, and that is sure to put her back on the bestseller list.” Meanwhile, the white-covered U.K. versions of the books which were announced this fall have been released, according to Twilight Lexicon’s research. So far, it looks like ATOM has released (as of October 14th), Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse with this format. Check them out here. The article at Daemon’s contains information on the slip which is self-explanatory, of course. By now, the film series is three deep, so chances are most of those fans which are/were going to buy the books have done so by now. Also, there aren’t any new film tie-in versions to purchase (naturally, the last one came out early in the summer to coincide with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’s release), so when one of those is introduced with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, that could also pick back up the sales speed. Any other ideas as to why? On a side note, it was definitely bound to happen at some point, and the fact that the entire Saga has not only made it on the Bestseller list but lingered there for years on end is extraordinary regardless of this current status. |
