Cosmopolis

The Film: Probably the most eagerly hyped film at this year’s festival, and one of the supposed frontrunners for the Palme d’Or, Cosmopolis marks David Cronenberg’s return to the arena of the bizarre. Adapted from the novel by American author Don DeLillo, the film will follow Robert Pattinson’s young billionaire on a journey into darkness as he discovers his fortune has evaporated, and decides to cut loose from conventional society. Paul Giamatti, Juliette Binoche, Samantha Morton and Jay Baruchel round out a pleasingly offbeat cast.

Why We’re Excited: After a couple of enjoyable but conventional films in the form of A History Of Violence and Eastern Promises, we’re looking forward to seeing Cronenberg return to the outer-limits of big screen storytelling.Cosmopolis represents the director’s first self-penned script since 1999′seXistenZ, and from the looks of the clips and trailers we’ve seen so far, it promises to be deliciously weird. It also stands to catapult Pattinson out of the clutches of the soul-sapping Twilight series into a role more deserving of his talents. Put simply, we can’t wait.

Rob talks more about Cosmopolis and Cannes
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

Whereas Penn and Pitt are familiar favorites at Cannes, this year’s festival includes a new crop of young actors seeking more adventurous work, including LaBeouf, Efron and Pattinson.

“When you fantasize about how the world views you as an actor, you’re like, ‘I want to be recognized at Cannes,’” says Pattinson, who has drawn high compliments from his director, Cronenberg, for his performance in “Cosmopolis.”

Pattinson has previously been to Cannes to promote the “Twilight” film “New Moon” in 2009, but he’s clearly thrilled to be a part of the main slate.

“Hopefully, people don’t hate it,” he says, alluding to Cannes’ famously vocal audiences.

Taylor Lautner Jumps On Parkour Thriller ‘Tracers’; FilmNation To Sell At Cannes
Posted by Maria • No Comments »

EXCLUSIVE: Just in time for this week’s start of the Cannes Film Festival, Taylor Lautner has been set to star in Tracers, an action thriller that FilmNation Entertainment’s Glen Basner will unveil to international buyers. Directed by Daniel Benmayor (Bruc, The Manhunt), Tracers reunites Lautner with Twilight Saga producers Mary Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill Entertainment. WME is repping the domestic distribution rights.

Lautner will play Cam, a messenger in New York City who is a wiz on a bike but who’s in debt to an organized crime gang. He crashes his bike into a sexy stranger and is seduced by her and the thrill of the world of parkour that she introduces him to. The buzz has begun spreading on the film and there is bidding among a number of territories. It is also very possible that a domestic deal will be made quickly. ”We’ve had great successes making films for this audience and believe this project will continue our solid track record,” Bowen said. Godfrey added that “We had a remarkable experience with Taylor on Twilight and look forward to bringing Cam to life.” Lautner’s next pic, Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2, will be released November 16.

FilmNation will also be selling the Soflia Coppola-directed The Bling Ring and the Pedro Almodovar-directed Los Amantes Pasajeros; as well as the competition titles the John Hillcoat-directed Lawless with Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy, and the Jeff Nichols-directed Mud with Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon.

Cannes 2012: Sarah Gadon, Emily Hampshire to Receive Inaugural ‘Diamond’ Prizes

Canadian jeweller Birks named the homegrown actresses as the first winners as it honors top international Canadian talent on the Croissette on May 23.

TORONTO – Canadian actresses Sarah Gadon and Emily Hampshire will trot up the red carpet in Cannes to receive the inaugural Birks Canadian Diamond prizes. The career accolades come as Telefilm Canada, the federal government’s film financier, and Canadian luxury jeweller Birks, partner to spotlight top international Canadian talent with a gala reception at the Cannes Film Festival on May 23.

“Sarah and Emily’s talent can now be celebrated not only across Canada, but around the planet,” Birks president and CEO Jean-Christophe Bedos said Thursday after choosing and unveiling the first two Diamond award winners.

Besides receiving the Diamond prizes, the Canadian actresses will be much in demand with red carpet photo calls and parties in Cannes. Gadon is set to promote two Canadian movies, as she stars opposite Robert Pattinson in David Cronenberg’s thriller Cosmopolis, which is screening in official competition.

Toronto-based Gadon also plays the female lead in Brandon Cronenberg’s directorial debut Antiviral, which will screen in the Un Certain Regard section. And Montreal-born Hampshire is also part of the Cosmopolis cast, and performed a cameo role in Quebec director Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyways, which is booked into the Un Certain Regard category. And Hampshire is set for a role in Dolan’s first English-language film, Letters to a Young Actor.

“Sarah and Emily are two rising stars, who through their wonderful performances, elevate this very creative process,” Carolle Brabant, Telefilm Canada’s executive director, said in her own tribute to Gadon and Hampshire on Thursday.

Robert Pattinson, “Cosmopolis”

Is there life after “Twilight”? Pattinson’s non-vampire work has not inspired enthusiasm, so all eyes will be on his performance as a Manhattan billionaire in David Cronenberg’s Don DeLillo adaptation. Positive buzz could open doors to better roles and non-teenage fans.

We’re so excited for all the cast and crew on Cosmopolis! They deserve all the attention and accolades.
